My Treachery

Marine Girls - Lazy Ways -

++From the inbox: Friend of SOG Robin Grey has an album release party tomorrow in London at the Slaughtered Lamb, if anyone happens to be in the neighborhood. His 3rd album, The Nearest Door, is being released this week.

++My adoration for Tracey Thorn is preeeetty well documented over the past few years, but I didn't know about her project Marine Girls from back in 1980! Much like Young Marble Giant, these songs have a fragile DIY feel that wouldn'tve made it in the harsh music world of today.

Honey is so sweet it could be the intro to someone reading a nursery rhyme. (The production in Mimi Carey's later version totally ruined the song.)  And how many songs incorporate gargling the way TT does in In Love. Her early mastery of wry lyric was there from the get-go.

Love, indeed:

His. Girl.

Really feeling the Rapture vibe of this song from Brooklyn's Fronds Friends. Points for the mock classic Scorsese direction, gauzy background vocals and Samantha Urbani's phrasing throughout the song in general. Stylish stuff:

Raspberry Feelings

Jbs

Glazin': It probably wasn't intentional but this song by CMJ faves The Jacuzzi Boys would probably fit perfectly into a Koo Koo Roo campaign. Or a Valentine's card. (Romance?)

Heh heh, I think we all know what he's referring to when he uses the euphemism about wanting to "Koo Koo" with her..*

Feels old and familiar and new all at once...

Reflected In the Fire

Mikkachu
++No new news is not good news: C'mon Micachu and the Shapes, get back to making that chirpy homemade moonshine-like rockabilly we's been craven like wes.

++Wow, strong McLaughlin Show-like words. DISCUSS!

Avo

So today's viddy is from the oft sepia'd Ben Sommers, off the album Avocado Chip that some are calling are a challenge to listen to, others are calling "a glorious workout" and still others are calling "an undiscovered masterpiece." Praise from the now jaded internet? DISCUSS! The song is especially pretty when it breaks open at 3:03.:

Nothing To Undo

Db

++Johann Soderqvist wasn't familiar with horror movies prior to scoring Let The Right One In, he just felt that it was the kind of film that needed a lot of zither.

++More ROmance! (Sounds like Macca.)

++If I had a dark movie to score I'd use a lil of the eerie sounds of Dirty Beaches. (This imagery is sure to work it's way into a cool future nightmare for sure. So I got that to look forward to...) (Yeah, I should probably stop watching these videos now.)

++I like the way her pose forms an "S." Sade probably even looks good in Fisheye.

++Lake Country: "You were always on my mind."(minute 1:58, kind of bonkers!)*:

Nuclear Seasons

Smart-And-Final-History

++Those Supreme hats that Tyler the Creator wears remind me of something you could buy at Smart & Final.

++Here's an older interview with Mark Oliver Everett from Eels. A few thoughts: 1) Someone should do a mashup of dog faced boy and two headed boy or "two headed dog faced boy", 2) How cool would it be to be performing and see Jimmy Page in the audience doing finger pistols at you, 3) Hmm, people in Amsterdam don't have beards.

++Charli XCX knew you were no angel. Is Romance back? xoxo, Carrie Bradshaw. (vias)

Joey Baby

Selah+Sue

++El Chupacabra.

++One of the members of Wang Chung is named J'accuse(!!).

++Something about Selah Sue's mannerisms bring Joey Lauren Adams to mind. Like, if Adams were to ever need a musical stand-in the way they used to do in old studio productions, Sue would do her vocals. (Zoiks, she gets a little Sam Kinnison in there towards the end. LOOKOUT!)

Quickies

++Everyone's got an opinion on something these days.

++Here's a song by Skybox sure to cause a case of janglehead from too much boppin'. I like the line you "f--d with the sunshine." White masks: so in this year.

++Caitlan "Eunice" Evanson makes an appearance on pianoman Jim Brickman's latest album. Unsolicited advice: Maybe go a little less "Blair Witch project" creepy on the intro to this press kit next time around.

++Hey whaddya know, Kate Winslet sings, too.

Invitation

Dominant

So I got no choice but to post a song that includes the phrase all the cool people (insert Pee Wee smirk) are using this year: "Hell for leather!" by Dominant Legs.

DL also have another catchier song with an Artistics-like refrain called Hoop for Love, that can be viewed furtively, on the DL, here. And here's one that clangs about Fleetwood Mac-style.

They'll play the Merc Lounge in New York with chapeau donners Nurses tomorrow nite.

I just love their fresh sprightly harmony and the shot (3:42)where they are both looking different directions:

RECOMMENDED:

Here My Dears

Icebird
Mmmhmm, RJD2 and Aaron Livingston are back as Icebird. Listen below. The song gets a wee bit Axis Bold as Love in the middle but why wouldn't it, as a way to showcase Livingston's smooth yet sandy pipes..and then the song comes hard again with some creepy Flock of Wawa voices chiming in at the end. This is more of a musical exercise than a song, but I'm feeling it..:

A Fizzy Drink

Woo, here's a preview of the next Planet of the Apes movie and bad newsies, James Franco's put on some weight. Alzheimer's injections are totes caloric.

Ab
No really, it's a gloriously sparse song by The Albertans (some of whom are from Brooklyn) and quite an enjoyable video despite what the You Tube commenters say.

Don't Be Shy

++I was listening to an old WTF/Marc Maron podcast the other day and comedian Larry Miller was talking about how comedy is in the pauses and spacing between jokes and laughs. (Paraphrasing), He said that music is the same way in that if there was a wall of sound without any breaks coming at you, your brain couldn't make sense of anything.

Anyhoobastank, in this older song by Tigercity, I like the Hall and Oatesian lags that last a little too long in around minute 1:03.

++Has Stefon used Edward Scissorhands in one of his club scenarios yet?

Hella Good

Article-2045395-0E3B8C3300000578-405_634x350
++I love the Daily Mail's use of the phrase "hell for leather." Pink? Hell for Leather! The Olsen Twins? Yup, Hell for Leather! I guess if they wear Star Wars masks, you can't take Tiny Nietzsche's advice.

++Twaining.

++From the inbox, the mostly instrumental 'Spotlight, Floodlight' will play the Room 5 Lounge on La Brea on October 18th. Have a listen to the soothing song Bella Notte here.

++'Tra' simply doesn't have the passion of, say, 'Bo'.

++Just toss her in the drink.

++The Skin I Live In: The new Almodovar movie looks craycray! Two thoughts on the trailer: 1) Must look up how to say "It puts the lotion in the basket" in Spanish. 2) At 1:23 I totally wanted the lady to break into Fosse jazzhands. (Cliffs notes: For those who don't know, my understanding is that in the movie Banderas plays a guy who creates a Frankenstein woman.)

Two Birds

Anoraak

++Weird. There's no flanking accounting for people's interests.

++I like this passage from this older interview with Anoraak in which he explains how he first fell in love with music:

"When my dad was playing harmonica to me. His face was changing, his look was not the same, he was looking so happy, I think this is where it all began."

Supa chill.:
