It's great when bands pick out just the right, pivotal phrase from a song's lyrics to use as the title, in this case "Cover Your Tracks." This tight jam is similar to the Toto-like song by Wild Beasts from a few months back, with more steel drum action. Also check out Come and See*.
Here's a gorgeous track by San Francisco dream popsters Silver Swans that sounds as if it could've been part of a lost John Hughes movie soundtrack. The duo gets their name from the Wonder Woman stories. (via)

Equally fantastic is this remix of the song by Letting Up Despite Great Faults that pumps up the original, making Ann Yu sound clearer and lonelier. I think I prefer the ending in the remix, as well, it's a little less abrupt.:
Via Floating, this phunked up song by Chicagoans Loyal Divide does the same thing that Allo Darlin's did the other day, which is to skate off the song's main riff and sail into some serene air. The screech throughout is a nice touch, too. Good Good. Loyal Divide vision vision mp3 was here.
From the inbox: Chris Otepka and The Heligoats are back with some new material, and an appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk concert series. (In John McLaughlin voice: False advertising! I see no Tiny Desk! Liars!)
The song below is off of a new EP titled Let Loose.. a jangly jam that is mellow yet urgent. Heligoats A Word from our sponsor mp3 was here.
From the box: Gerry Rafferty might be gone but Brooklyn's Louis Schefano aka Lou-is picks up where he left off in this catchy, somber locomotive of a song. Would make a nice companion piece to Caught Wheeeeeeel.:
I'm not sure if he's the same guy who is on Chase and Status' song Blind Faith. Sounds like his voice. Some pretty intense comments on the "Uncensored" video, and it's meaning right here.
++The Minutemen's Mike Watt (he "jams Econo") has teamed with Tera Melos for Manar the Magic, below. Tera Melos opens for Ms. Marnie Stern on her upcoming tour and their EP Zoo Weather hits on Feb. 22nd.
Only watched the video to see who did the Trapaholick's-like narrator voice (Baz Hendrix, that's such a perfect voiceover name..) the We Are Scientists guys were copying, and it turns out to be one of the guys from ZZ Top.

Louisville Kentucky's The Pass will perform at The Satellite on Feb. 1st.
It all starts off innocently in this video where the band plays Four Square until things get unruly and the men go all "Kitchen Makeover Tobey Maguire" on each other. I think any of us who've ever played tetherball (and have chain shaped scars to prove it) will scoff at this video and agree that Four Square ain't nothing.
Too bad this song by Voxhaul Broadcast didn't come out in time for Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist because it has the feel and energy of a night out. The lyrics are great, even if the guy uses the old Eagle Eye Cherry line about 'not knowing what will happen tomorrow.' Guys have been using that line on girls foreevvvver. (thanks KEXP!)
This song by Casey Spooner takes a while to get going. Once it does there are some wonderful textures (sorry, had to dip into the blogger word bag) in the midst of all the electro-noodling. Like Gruff Rhys and Herbert, these songs aren't pop friendly and more extended grooves on an idea. Still, props for the experimentation.
++Here's a video for the lovely and mellow song Two of the Lucky Ones. Depending on who you talks to, it's either done by The Thorns, a band made up of Matthew Sweet, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins or "The Droge and Summers Blend."
Basia Bulat! She got past me again last year. Her songs never make a huge impression at first, and have a way of quietly getting past only to spring up later with a powerful poetic force. A sneak attack of sorts, like that little girl with the textbooks in Men In Black.
In this video she could be Michelle Williams' doppleganger from afar and has the strength to carry a small tune in a biggole cold, scary lobby all by her lonesome...:
Alrighty then, here's something that finally that floats mee boat. I like the way Elizabeth Morris from Allo Darlin' says the word "layips" instead of lips, (regional dialect!) and the disembodied laughter and then how the second half of the song with it's soft "oohs" turns into something sublime. And then the drums come in again and...perfect.
This song was made for karaoke or at least the simulated kind of karaoke that rom-com writers imagine (thanks, LHNA!). Allo darlin kiss your lips mp3 was here
Hmm, been trying to find my musical fix this morning without much luck. Will keep searching, in the meantime, here's news from Consequence of Sound that Holy Ghost's new album will feature Penguin Prison's Chris Glover and the one and only Michael McDonald. Sup!
Hard to believe that this is Holy Ghosts first actual album. Get the song below, right here.
Slothboogienavigated me toward the work of Madrid producer Pional and this reworking of Matthew Herbert's Kerstin Basler. It's a loud, rowdy unconventional song to begin with, probably not the kind of thing you'd listen to while chilling next to a placid lakeside (unless you have a fear of ducks, I guess). But I like it precisely for that unconventionality.
What's most interesting about it is the quiet Audi commercial-like creeping, pulsing synth in the background, playing against the people's spirited chants and screams.
++Yes, the end of 'lists' season is coming to a close, which can only mean the beginning of festival season! Festivals, how we love you (Right DDeV?) and the hazy memories you bring of night skies, warm breezes, carnival games, followed by rainy nights. Oops, nope now I'm confusing some memories with Adventureland.
From the inbox: Feelin' this workout from Crazy Eli Escobar that's all beats, noises and wires hanging out. Someone call Camille Grammer, this is Club MTV all over again. Get this and other remixes by DJ Mehdi and DFA's Runaway, right here. Eli Escobar love thing part 1 mp3 was here
++The Radio Dept.'s Passive Aggressive Singles 2002-2010 comes out on January 25th.
++Regina Spektor and Adam Green are sending people on over to You Tube to watch this video by Only Son, whose album Searchlight is due Jan. 18th. The video stars Aleska Palladino from Boardwalk Empire and kinda has a Murs/Vertical Horizon ending, but I ain't gonna spoil it. It would make for a great dystopic parenting playlist along with XTC'sPlans for Nigel.
