-I'ma agree with the Rajskub. Someone should use a creepy slowed down version of the Beach Boys' overplayed song Fun Fun Fun in a slasher movie bloodbath scene.
-Labelled: Neon Walrus Mexican Disco Pop. Sadly, no actual walruses disco dancing, (would've been a You Tube sensation) but still a video worth a few minutes for a chill cloudy weather song.:
From the mailbox..... -The man known as Andrew Bird (not this Birdman) will be performing at Radio City Music Hall on June 18th. Anyone purchasing a ticket from this link will receive a free download of the never-before released Live At the Precipice; 10 live songs from his Noble Beast Tour.
(Andrew Bird oh no mp3 was here before it flew away)
-Apostophe afflicted Atlantans It's Elephant's are set to release their second album Gets Along on June 26th. Band members include former members of the punk band The Letters Organize, whom my sweetie Dave Grohl once named one of his favorite up-and-coming bands. If you like what you hear here be sure to download "Sam Loomis Hardware" at www.threefortysevenaugusta.com.
its elephants better in 77 was here mp3
-Aww: Trent Reznor, Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction have raised over $850,000 for a NIN fan who was denied a heart transplant because of a lack of transplant centers in Nevada. Because the response has been so overwhelming (mostly through Twitter) the band can no longer give away backstage passes and dinners but fans will still get a rare signed CD and swag from Tony Hawk. More here.
"With more seductive vocals from Nancy Whang and more help from James
Murphy, Juan Maclean is back with more ballsy Human League-esque (early
Human League, dammit) electro confrontation. You will be reincarnated
as a dancing robot in Blade Runnerland, should you fully dig the new
Juan Maclean!"
I like how Maclean is alternately referred to as Juwan "The Juan Maclean" in many places, much like how Quincy Jones is usually referred to as "The Legendary Quincy Jones."
In the following really-cool-looking video for the song One Day, a couple attempts to work out their interpersonal issues along with those of their hologrammed selves. Talk about a complicated relationship. They're probably arguing over whose hologram ordered the Wayans Brother movie on Pay per view. No one ever wants to cop to that.
(the juan maclean one day mp3 used to be here. one day, a long time ago, a day that is now passed.)
There are several hootenannies happening inside the SOG mailbox:
Brooklyn's Donny Hue and the Colors have a new album Letter from Virginia coming out on June 23rd. I like most any song that has call and response going on between the lead singer and the backing singers. DH and the Cs will be at The Box in Charlottesville on the 16th and releasing more free singles like this folk goodie on their website in the weeks to come.
Welsh illustrator Pete Fowler, who is known for having done album cover art work for Super Furry Animals, has created a series of cartoons called Monsterism Island.
An album associated with the cartoon, A Psychedelic Guide To Monsterism Island, is coming soon and will feature songs by Gruff Rhys, Wolf People, space cowboys the Advisory Circle (woot!) and Brazilian DJs Monsters At Work:
Electric Blue call themselves "the most punk rock country-blues chamber orchestra on earth." This sleazy Tom Waits meets Robert Cray number seems to be tailor made for the intro of an indie film:
Unfortunately, most of the videos by both entities have been disabled to prevent embedding. Which is a total shame because the videos are all well-produced, if a little holographically hollow in the same way MJ's You Are Not Alone or the Amnesty International videos are. And they all have an enthusiastic innocence that hearkens back to what videos used to be like maybe 20 years ago; glossy,sexist but inherently fun and cheesy in a way only world music can be.
For whatever reason there was some kind of golden age in Top Music and Armada videos that occurred between March and October of 2008. This one is my favorite:
Rio is so life-affirming, how can anyone resist this? (3 million viewers agree!) He's some sort of messianic figure, possibly created by Bacardi that bestows benevolence and luck on turtles and beach partygoers, but for some reason saves his wrath for fishermen.
++
No really, my favorite is this one by Crazy Loop called Johanna Shut Up, that features giant dolls come to life and the obligatory frustrated parents trying to beat down bedroom doors as well as the refrain "Why don't you kill me and then shut up?" Which seems to be a little bit beside the point to me.
++
And I wish I could post this one, Shaun Baker featuring Maloy Hey Hi Hello because I love the lyrics, "Don't give up, don't choose submit. Sh-t on it!" and the part about the stars being "irregular."
++
Armada star Dash Berlin's Till the Sky Falls Down, over 1 million hits. Lots of skygazing.
++
Here's one by the CEO himself, handsome Gabriel Macht lookalike Armin van Buuren (featuring Sharon den Adel)...20 Million views!
++
(armin van buuren sharon den adel in and out of love, rio shine on mp3, shaun baker hey hi hello remix mp3s used to be here. quit yer whinin bb and cc whinins)
Toronto DJ and flashmob kingpin Deadmau5 caused a commotion at the Apple store on 3rd Street Promenade on Friday when plans to fill the store beyond capacity went right. Too right:
A reliable source tells us that Santa Monica, California police shut
down a scheduled appearance by Deadmau5 at the local Apple store last
night before it could happen as a result of overcrowding. On his
MySpace blog Mr. Mau5
encouraged fans to reprise an in-store thronging at a previous Los
Angeles-area appearance: "How many people can we fit into an apple
store," he writes.
"a 100+ book of Lynch’s photographs — is on sale now at DNotS.com. However, in a weird twist, instead of getting music with the set, buyers instead will receive a blank CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will,’ ” a spokesperson for Danger Mouse said. “Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.”
Excuse today's goofy post, I'm so excited for the 3 day weekend. Hooray for government sanctioned respite!
Today's video is from "punkers, seen live", the Jadewalkers. I like how lead singer Emma Vikingskull leaves her sunglasses on while performing, an affectation that no one in recent memory has exploited to their advantage. Especially the rockstar way she lets her sunglasses rakishly hang off her nosebridge, saying she don't give an F, in the style of Magnum P.I.'s John Hillerman, Yoko Ono, Keith Richards or Whoopi Goldberg.
In the unauthorized biography The Second Coming of Steve Jobs author Alan Deutschman reports that Jobs once dated Joan Baez.
Deutschman quotes Elizabeth Holmes, a friend of Jobs from his time at
Reed College, as saying she "believed that Steve became the lover of Joan Baez in large measure because Baez had been the lover of Bob Dylan." In another unauthorized biography, iCon: Steve Jobs by Jeffrey S. Young & William L. Simon, the authors suggest that
Jobs might have married Baez, but her age at the time (41) meant it was
unlikely the couple could have children. Baez included a mention of
Jobs in the acknowledgments of her 1987 memoir And A Voice To Sing With.
A little site note: I've been cleaning up 'round here and deleting last month's mp3s and wanted to make some recommendations that readers should grab from the past few months before they're gone. These are the songs I've played most in my car when I'm not listening to Michael McDonald (.008% of the time). Act quick cuz they're about to be deleted again, some have already been erased:
-Charles Hamilton, Brooklyn Girls: I love the sweetness in his swagger, his scratchy cat allergy voice..reminds me of early Flavor Flav. He sounds as if he's on the verge of cracking himself up.
-Jeremy Jay, In This Lonely Town : You'll swear you've stumbled on some lost New Wave bootleg. Nope, he's new.
-Das Racist, Combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut: Listen to it once and it sounds completely inane, just the refrain "Combination Taco Bell and Pizza Hut" over and over. It really takes about 5 listenings to hear all the small nuances. Husband swears that it is a commentary on how our society is becoming one large unending corporation and how even with technology people still have a hard time making human contact. Hmm, don't know about that...
-Dan Deacon, Build Voice: This one might cause your brain to explode into a snowfall, a flurry of a million little player piano notes that will blanket the ground where you once stood.
-Nite Jewel, Weak For You: Imperfect perfection. It goes on far too long. But it would be ruined if it was touched or fixed at all. It has a distorted synth hook, possibly only 3 or 4 notes, that will stay in your head like the Kia Hamster commercial song.
That lovable square Gwen Paltrow got out her trusty box of assorted stationary and Bat-pen and enlisted some of her music loving friends (including DJ AM, Guy Oseary, Gabe Tesoriero from Def Jam and Phil Harvey from Coldplay)to put together playlists that get the party started. It's been my experience that DJ's never tire of answering that question.
I kid but secretly I love this kind of thing. Mostly standard fare all around from those surveyed; a lot of Madonna, MGMT and M.I.A.
William Orbit, who I totally forgot about, mixed it up by throwing in something off of the soundtrack of the movie Shark Tale. Here were a few of his selections.
These are my top ten party favourites! I was visualising a party
with a wide range of age and taste. They’re listed in order of play,
not of preference. (Car Wash xtina aguiler and missy elliott and wearing my rolex mp3s by wiley used to be here, also bucketheads the bomb mp3)
“Music” – Madonna
“Don’t Stop the Music” – Rihanna
“Rock This Party (Everybody Dance Now)” – Bob Sinclair
“Jump Around” – House of Pain
“Groove Is in the Heart” – Deee-Lite
“I See You Baby” – Groove Armada
“Filthy Gorgeous” – Scissor Sisters
“Crank That (Soulja Boy)” – Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em
Well, continuing with this week's theme of music in commercials...
This video by ApSci (Advanced Placement in Science?) could be a commercial for the iPhone. It's not, though. Via The Underwire, the duo used "Nothing but their iPhone, a portable printer and a webcam" to create a stop motion from cities all over the world.
ApSci's album Best Crisis Ever won't be out until August 11.
This video by Seventeen Magazine subscribers Bad Flirt for the song Hiroshima, Mon Frere came out either last year or a month ago, depending on the source. With its sunflower and sepia tinges, and fish eye camera lens it looks like it was a dream Dave Pirner might have had once, back in the 90s. Bad Flirt's sound is a little dated but it's a sound my ears have strangely missed. Their album Virgin Talk is out now on iTunes.
-Not related to the item above, but when are the Hamster dudes gonna start doing videos? The brain bollweevil of a song that is used in the Kia commercial and will stay in your head until you die is done by 'Marz.' True masochists can buy it here for 99cents and listen to it front, back, side to side, front front back back side to side.
-This John Daly is not to be confused with this John Daly, IrishDJ, producer and vinyl enthusiast. Many blogs describe the latter Daly as being deep house, a phrase I haven't heard in a long time. This Is A Lonely Beat is Daly's 8th EP on Clone Records and can be sampled here.
-Better Than Ezra is back with their 7th studio album titled Paper Empire. Taste:
(ooh waah ah ah ah ah better than ezra absolutely still mp3 used to be here)
