That Means Someone Is Talking About It

Garry_shandling Playcrayplay Michelle

This was going to be a post about Stephen King's latest Top 20 list in the May 9th issue of Entertainment Weekly (that I can't find a link to anywhere, unfortunately)  but then I listened to a lot of the songs and they were far too honkytonk for my taste. Well, except for two of his picks:

LCD Soundsystem Yeah mp3

Billy Bragg Wilco California Stars mp3

Alejandro Escovedo Pale Blue Eyes Man Who Sold the World

Robert Cray I was Warned mp3

Michelle Shocked Come a Long Way mp3

Happily, I got sidetracked and discovered the music of Alejandro Escovedo (he looks like Garry Shandling in that picture, no?) singer of King's 4th most listened-to song, Castanets. He's done several covers including a Lonesome Dove-ish version of one of my all-time favorite songs, Pale Blue Eyes. This will be something like the 3rd cover of Pale Blue Eyes I have in my library; others love it, too.

Escovedo's other more bluesy bar songs remind me of another beloved album from long ago that no one talks about anymore (I've got the feeling I've already posted on this before...) Robert Cray's I Was Warned . And that got me thinking about another wonderful and forgotten album from around the same time, Michelle Shocked's Arkansas Traveller.
